SOS Software

This page details all BBC Micro support information, although it assumes that you are trying to run the software via an emulator on your PC. If the help provided below does not resolve your problem then please contact us with details of the problem you are experiencing.

General

All the BBC software available here was originally written for an Acorn Electron, but has been tested on a BBC Micro emulator - specifically BeebEm. All of the downloads from this site have been ZIPped and when unpacked are in .SSD (Single-Sided Disk) format, which should be compatible with most BBC emulators.

Installation

To install the disk image (SSD) you will first need to unpack it from the ZIP/Compressed Folder and then copy the .SSD file to the relevant folder for your emulator to pick up. BeebEm has a disk images folder within the same folder as the program for this purpose. Other emulators may use other methods, so please check the documentation that came with the emulator.

Running the software

Before running the program it is recommended that you run your emulator in BBC Model B mode, as some of the programs available from here can sometimes not function as they should when run under a different mode (BBC Master, for example).

Once the emulator is running load the virtual disk as normal (in BeebEm this is done by going to "File" > "Load Disk 0"). Type "*CAT" (or "*.") to view the directory of the disk. Running a program is achieved by typing CHAIN "<filename>", but a few programs will show more than one file. If this is the case then check the relevant software page here, as it will say what you need to type to run the program.
